Since 1992, Armenian residents of Samtskhe-Javakheti (Armenian-populated region of Georgia – REGNUM) repeatedly demanded autonomous status, but always encountered problems, as a REGNUM correspondent has been informed by deputy leader of the national Javakh movement Artush Tonokyan. According to Tonokyan, obstacles originated both from the Georgian and Armenian authorities."
