"Truckers threaten strike over plan to give licences to Turkish Cypriots
By Jean Christou
TRUCK drivers yesterday threatened to strike over plans to give licences to Turkish Cypriot drivers to transport their own goods through the south of the island.
Following a meeting yesterday afternoon, the head of the truck drivers’ association Loucas Demetriou told reporters that the government was leaving them no choice but to take measures.
Last week, the government decided to give licences to Turkish Cypriot drivers to bring over their own goods and facilitate trade. However, it did not mean that Turkish Cypriot drivers could operate within the south of the island per se.
“Granting the licences is part of measures to facilitate commercial transactions between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots,” Government Spokesman George Lillikas said yesterday."
