"EU praised the role played by Turkey on cartoon crisis

The European Union praised Turkey�s efforts to diminish the tension between peoples of the Western world and Muslim countries due to the cartoon crisis.
The Foreign Minister of Austria which is the term president of the EU, Ursula Plassnik discussed the issue Wednesday on phone with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul.
While underlining the importance of the freedom of expression as a basic human right, both of the ministers also urged for respect to the religious believes, according to joint statement published Thursday. �Freedom of expression and the respect to the sacred values are complementary principles, rather than contradictory ones� the ministers said at the joint statement. "
