ANKARA - Turkish Daily News
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said the killing of an Italian priest in Turkey's Black Sea province of Trabzon, a murder that shocked Italy, should not be allowed to affect Ankara's bid for European Union membership, but ministers from his Cabinet disagreed.
The Italian prime minister, a staunch supporter of Turkey's EU aspirations, also called on Turkey to 'neutralize fanatics.'
'The situation is quite worrying,' Berlusconi said on a radio talk show, speaking of what he called a threat of violence linked to Islamic militants around the world. Berlusconi said he was about to telephone Turkish Prime Minster Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and would tell him that his government 'had to identify and neutralize these fanatics.'"
