Why did the Kurdish Workers’ Party, or PKK, decide to end the ceasefire on 1 June 2004 and why is it escalating the the violence? Umit Firat, a writer of Kurdish origin, well known for his liberal views, first in an article published in the Radikal daily on July 17, and later in an interview with Aksiyon weekly claimed the PKK activities were the work of “hidden forces” who use [Abdullah] Ocalan in order to wear down the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government and hinder reforms for European Union (EU) membership."
