The April 24, 2004 referenda on both sides of Cyprus on the U.N. plan marked a major turning point in the change in international perception of the Cyprus problem. The overwhelming “yes” vote on the Turkish Cypriot side and a massive “no” by the Greek Cypriots in the first-ever public vote on any settlement plan in the history of the Cyprus problem provided the international community with a clear view of the reality on Cyprus: the Greek Cypriots have no interest in a compromise settlement. The referendum result in the north was the declaration of the demise of the “No solution is itself a solution” mentality and of the politicians supporting that stance over the past decades."
