Festival draws transplants from homeland

A few centuries ago, such a splendid silk carpet could only have been found in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, home to the storied sultans of the Ottoman Empire.
But Saturday, it was hanging on the wall of a simple booth at the eighth annual Turkish Festival at Custom House Plaza in Monterey.
And Gulizar Baggson was hard at work on another.
'If I sat here all day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., I'd probably produce about a half inch,' she said. 'Maybe.'"
