Charlotte Observer | 07/23/2006 | Greetings from Turkey

"WE TRAVEL WITH THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER
Greetings from Turkey

Here are siblings Betty Scott of Harrisburg and Tom Piccoli of Fort Mill, S.C., on a recent trip to Turkey. Among their stops was Troy -- the ruins of Troy, that is: Anybody who has read Homer's "Iliad" -- or seen Brad Pitt's 2004 "Troy" movie -- is aware of the tussle between the Greeks and ill-fated Trojans. The Greeks won after sneaking into Troy in a wooden horse; a copy of one is right behind the travelers."

Sunday, July 23, 2006

ŞEFİK KAHRAMANKAPTAN

The human lifespan might be longer nowadays than it used to be before, but it is nevertheless limited. Although it is not a very long period of time for a country, 83 years means a lot of experience regarding humankind. We are losing very precious people raised in the republican period, and who have made significant contributions in society, one after the other. Recently we have lost music educator Muzaffer Arıkan (1923-2006), who was also a choir conductor and the person who introduced choir music to Turkey. "

"Turks are angry
Sunday, July 23, 2006

TDN editorial by Yusuf KANLI

Turks are angry nowadays. They are angry with their own government for not brushing aside U.S. and Iraqi objections and entering northern Iraq to do something substantive against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). They are angry at Israel for entering Lebanon, engaging in an operation against the Hezbollah presence there but also killing civilian Lebanese and destroying their homes. They are very angry with the Americans for letting Israel enter Lebanon but telling Turkey to stay out of northern Iraq. "

Trevor Royle on Turkey's persecution of its writers

WritersÊmakeÊhandy scapegoats when despotic regimes decide to defend the indefensible and in so doingÊmakeÊthemselvesÊlook utterly ridiculous.ÊBeingÊindependentÊand working largely in isolation, authors are soft targets and despite the excellent work undertaken by organisations such as International Pen and Sara Whyatt's Writers in Prison Committee, far too many of their kind are being banged up all over the world for the crime of daring to speak their mind."

The Israeli offensive against Lebanon is now in its 10th day and there are no prospects that it will stop any time in the near future. As a matter of fact there are signs that the offensive will turn into an occupation of at least some parts of Lebanon.

Until now the U.S. has given its approval to the offensive, much to the anger of world public opinion. The Israelis say this is an act of self-defense to dislodge Hezbollah, which captured two Israeli soldiers. But what has been going on for the past 10 days goes well beyond an act of self-defense and has become a naked violation of the sovereignty of Lebanon. It is no different from what Syria has done in Lebanon in the past."
