Published: March 27 2006 03:00 | Last updated: March 27 2006 03:00
The Turkish government yesterday sought to reassure investors that monetary policy and the independence of the central bank were intact despite the president's rejection of its nominee to be the bank's next governor.
Amid an intensifying political fight between the government and the president over the central bank post, Ali Babacan, the economy minister, said a new governor would be nominated but the bank's commitment to an independent monetary policy and the fight against inflation would not be weakened."

"Awe-struck millions will watch total solar eclipse of Wednesday, March 29, 2006
Posted: March 2006
Squint . . . and maybe you can see this as a black ball (moon) moving in front of an orange ball (sun). In the course of its monthly orbit, the moon passes between the Earth and sun once a month. Usually the moon passes above or below the sun, as seen from our earthly vantage point, so no eclipse takes place. But on Wednesday, March 29, 2006, the moon's aim will be dead on. It will pass directly in front of the sun, and people in Earth's eastern hemisphere will see a partial or total solar eclipse. (NASA)
Ah, to be a globetrotter.
If you could move freely on the globe, you could enjoy the awesome spectacle of a total eclipse of the sun pretty often. The next one is scheduled to darken the daytime skies on Wednesday, March 29, 2006.
This week, you might be in Africa or Turkey. You might be cruising on the Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas right now, waiting for Wednesday's eclipse. Your big concern would be the weather."

The monster development set to double tourist capacity in the north
"The monster development set to double tourist capacity in the north
By Simon Bahceli
THE LAST time I went to Vokolida, or Bafra as it is now known in Turkish, was three summers ago. It was early evening and some friends and I wanted to swim. The road through the village and down to the sea was flanked by undulating hills peppered with olive trees and shrubs. And beyond the village there was nothing to spoil nature’s perfect design.
The beaches around the village are some of the best on the island, so it has always seemed inevitable that one day the scourge of tourism would extend to this natural paradise. However, the sheer immensity of what is being built at Vokolida is shocking, even to those long since reconciled to the fact that humanity appears quite willing to destroy even the last remnants of beauty. "

‘Opening of ports and airspace not a bargaining tool’
"‘Opening of ports and airspace not a bargaining tool’
By John Leonidou
PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday hit back at comments made by Turkish Cypriot ‘foreign minister’ Serdar Denktash, saying Turkey’s opening of its ports and airspace to Cypriot vessels and planes is an obligation towards the EU and not a bargaining tool.
He was responding to comments from Denktash, who initially said Turkey and the occupied north would open their ports and airspace as “a gesture of goodwill”, before demanding there be a simultaneous lifting of restrictions on Turkish Cypriots in exchange.
Papadopoulos said: “I will reiterate the position of the government. Turkey’s obligation to open its ports and airspace to Cypriot airliners and vessels is an obligation towards the EU. Turkey cannot demand exchanges for something that it is obliged to do."
