For Turks, accustomed as they are to endless domestic political upheavals since the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923, the election of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in 2002 was a welcome relief. Indeed, the previous year had seen the Turkish economy brought to its knees and only rescued with the injection of billions of IMF dollars.
