Expediency in Turkey

The formal acquittal on Tuesday of 236 military officers who had been convicted of plotting to overthrow the government put a final end to the sham cases that played a major role in consolidating the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-based Justice and Development Party. The overturning of the flawed convictions, welcome as it was, figured less as a triumph of justice than as a shift in the political priorities of Mr. Erdogan, who has become increasingly authoritarian.
