Istanbul (dpa) - Somewhat ironically, the Turkish government shut down of Twitter coincided with the eighth anniversary of the first ever tweet being sent around the world.
The Twitter ban was meant to curtail the online activities of Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s critics. However, just hours after its introduction, it appears to have spectacularly backfired, kindling renewed interest in the medium and placing the global spotlight on the democratic credentials of Turkey‘s embattled prime minister.
