The anti-corruption swoops by Turkish police on December 17, which netted 52 suspects including the sons of three government ministers, has provoked a serious political crisis. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister whose son Bilal would have been caught up in an aborted second round of arrests, has declared war on what he calls a “parallel state” of police officers, lawyers and officials determined to bring him and his government down.
