Last May a peaceful sit-in at an Istanbul park protesting the creation of a shopping center set off nationwide demonstrations against government policies.
The protest initially stood up against police opposition but eventually wound down because of excessive police brutality. At peaceful forums in public spaces across the country citizens continue to discuss how they can force a return to more democratic principles.
