Turkey: Italy's position on EU membership unaltered

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JUNE 5 - Recent events in Turkey will not change Italy's position of support for Turkey's EU membership bid, underscored Deputy Foreign Minister Marta Dassu'. Speaking on Radio Anch'io, she said that ''our interpretation is, if anything, the exact opposite. The overture to Turkey for membership talks is in reality'' the main ''tool we have. It is precisely in the negotiations process that the EU can exert the most influence'' on the issues of democracy and human rights.
