"Turkey Votes: Evet or Hayir?
September 21, 2010

Turkish voters September 12 approved a package of 26 constitutional amendments proposed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The 58% “evet” or “yes” vote boosts Erdoğan’s prospects in the July 2011 parliamentary elections, which could make him the longest serving Turkish leader since Kemal Atatürk. But the referendum victory also sets up a clash between his religiously-oriented Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Turkey’s traditionally dominant secular culture. How the next ten months unfold will be important not only for Turkey, but also for its neighbors, the European Union and the North Atlantic alliance."
