The eight-day standoff at the Supreme Military Council, known as YAŞ in Turkey, is a “civilian coup” by any count. For the first time the military was forced to bow to government pressures in establishing its upper echelons. This is an unprecedented development for the country, given its well-established traditions as far as its military culture is concerned."
