Two of Turkey’s important political parties, the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, and the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party, or DTP, held party conventions in Ankara over the weekend. According to law, these conventions, in which each political party elects its governing bodies and settles the party accounts, must be held every two or three years. Like in all other democracies, these conventions are important obligations to make political parties more democratic where bottom-up preferences predominate top-down choices."
