She may be a political novice and a minority voice in the male-dominated Parliament. But this feisty newcomer could represent one of the best ways for local Turkish-Americans to keep a finger on the pulse of their country of origin.
On Saturday, more than 100 scholars and Turkish-Americans from the region traveled to Columbia University in Manhattan, in part to hear Nursuna Memecan, one of 50 females in Turkey's 550-member Parliament. Memecan was invited to speak about the on-the-ground political struggles and advancements of Turkish women. "
