According to the German Marshall Fund's Transatlantic Trends survey published last Thursday, the feelings of Turks toward both the European Union and the United States cooled significantly in the past year, reportedly revealing a kind of growing tendency toward political isolation. Support for EU membership among Turks has fallen from 54 percent to 40 percent this year and only 26 percent of those surveyed expressed the belief that Turkey is likely to join the bloc eventually. Accordingly, on a 100-point thermometer scale, positive sentiments toward the U.S. dropped to 11 from 20 degrees in 2006 and only three percent of the respondents said they approve of President George W. Bush's handling of international policies. "
