Abdullah Gul, Turkey's foreign minister, has failed to secure enough votes to be elected president in a first round of balloting in the parliament. But Mr Gul, a devout Muslim whose challenge for the presidency caused a political crisis earlier this year, secured 341 votes against his chief rival's 71."
