In April, the army and the secular parties managed to torpedo his presidential ambitions. However, the recent landslide election victory won by Mr Gül's ruling AK party in July has resurrected his hopes of becoming president. The opposition believes Mr Gül has a hidden Islamic agenda but a military coup is looking increasingly unlikely."
