"Ankara criteria versus Copenhagen Criteria
Cengiz AKTAR
What Turkey needs today is not less but more democracy, not a second republic but rather a new and renovated left.
I first uttered this formula in 2000 when the then coalition government was challenging EU’s political criteria while arguing on the uniqueness of Turkish case. I have the feeling that we are back to those years. Indeed it is hard to disagree with the following statement issued by the Legal Workers Association: “With the simplest legal term, the General Staff’s press release dated April 27, 2007 should be evaluated as an attempt to prevent partially or totally the Turkish Grand National Assembly from the duty regulated in the Turkish Criminal Code’s Article 311.”"
