The Enemy stalks us: powerful, seductive and insidious, its deathly sphere of operations ranging from the plains of Anatolia to the sidestreets of Taksim and the bars of Bodrum. Everyday the casualty list grows longer. Worst of all, the casualties in Turkey's "other war" are those least prepared to defend themselves: the children. The Enemy is the burgeoning crisis of drug abuse by Turkish young people – and unless immediate and concerted action is taken to confront it, The Enemy will win here – as it has already won in the crack-infested streets of New York, in the heroin-hell parks of Zurich and along the pot-head canals of Amsterdam, claiming tens of thousands of young victims in its murderous wake.
