"My observation from Helsinki: Turkey's accession road to the EU is mined
Cengiz Candar
A while ago, the title of a column of mine in this space was "Turkey and the EU: So far, so good." Now, I feel obliged to title it "Turkey and the EU: So far, not so good." It could have been "So far, so bad" following the disclosure of the European Commission's presentation of its recommendations on the continuation of Turkey's accession negotiations. But, we still have time until Dec. 11, the day of the European Union foreign ministers meeting where the fate of the accession negotiations will be sealed. Until then, we will be witnessing hectic backdoors diplomatic efforts involving the EU-25 and Ankara, and perhaps even Washington if it can lift, for a while, its head from the troubles facing it in the Middle East."
