The recent stance of some EU member countries vis-à-vis Turkey is rattling the positive image of Europe. To begin with, it is fairly easy to sense a hostile approach, which was thought to have been left at the gates of Vienna. It is nothing but the self-denial of Europe. The big picture shows the striking contrast between the European democratic, pluralist, secular and liberal image, and its current attitude marked by double standards and a fear of Turkey. It is amazing to see a Europe unable to be self-critical and face up to its past, despite its huge intellectual accumulation."
