"Controversial film screens in Brussels

A FILM THE Cypriot government tried to blackball was last night watched by members of the European Parliament (EP) as part of a campaign against censorship in the EU.
Akamas, a feature-length movie made by Greek Cypriot director Panicos Chrysanthou, has been at the centre of controversy since the summer, when the government pulled the plug on £130,000 worth of funding earmarked for the film.
The Education Ministry, which initially backed the project, was upset by Chrysanthou’s inclusion of a scene where an EOKA traitor is killed in a church. According to the contract the government had with the filmmaker, the traitor was to have been killed in a coffee shop. Since the breakdown in relations with Chrysanthou, the government has vowed to prevent the screening of film in Cyprus. "
