ANKARA: A majority of Turks still want their country to join the European Union despite current tensions over Cyprus and reforms, but they do not believe the EU wants them, according to a survey published yesterday.
The poll, conducted by the ANAR agency for the pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper, showed 54.1% of Turks would vote in favour of joining the EU if a referendum were held today, while 37.1% would vote “no”.
But nearly two-thirds of those surveyed said they did not expect Turkey to join. Fewer than 30% thought it would."
