"Akşehir wants 2008 to be declared 'Year of Nasreddin Hodja'

The municipality of Akşehir has launched an initiative to declare the year 2008 the �Year of Nasreddin Hodja.�
Akşehir Mayor Mustafa Baloğlu reminded the Anatolia news agency that 2008 marks the 800th anniversary of the birth of Nasreddin Hodja, a renowned Turkish folk philosopher and humorist. �Culture and Tourism Minister Atilla Koç also supports our endeavors in this matter. Nasreddin Hodja is a world-renowned humorist. We want to commemorate him in a more meaningful way. We will submit a proposal to UNESCO for 2008 to be declared the �Year of Nasreddin Hodja'.� "
