Turkey's parliament took a significant step towards meeting a key requirement of continued assistance from the International Monetary Fund yesterday, when it approved controversial new social security and health insurance reforms.
The reform package, which has been debated in parliament for about two years, raises the retirement age, cuts pension entitlements and aims to rein in the cost of a welfare system that consumes a disproportionately large slice of the nation's wealth."
