"Gul works to secure Turkish seat on UN Security Council
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul yesterday in Ankara asked representatives of the United Nations Security Council member states to support Turkey's temporary membership candidacy for the council for the 2009-2010 period.
During a luncheon held in Ankara as part of promotional activities for Turkish membership, Gul told the 77 representatives that Turkey's presence on the Security Council would facilitate the prominent UN body's efforts in coping with various regional and international problems and threats.
In a move to underline the country's role in the international arena, Gul said, 'Turkey's unique place and its contribution to the creation of inter-communal solidarity and dialogue paves the way for the country to take a mediator role between different religious and cultural groups.' "
