Professor Yiannis Pallikaris had no personal connection with Turkey. He is a genuine Cretan, born in Chania 60 years ago, and a devoted scientist heading the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Crete. Yet for the last three years he has been a regular monthly passenger on the Athens-Istanbul flight. He stays here maybe a weekend, maybe a bit longer, yet his visits are eagerly awaited by his colleagues at the World Eye Hospital in Istanbul, whom he advises as a consultant. "
