When the last Ottoman ruler, Sultan Mehmet VI, slipped out of Istanbul on Nov. 17, 1922, the city had already lost its status as an imperial capital, for the empire was dead. Indeed, the sultan also had lost his title, for the Grand National Assembly on the first of the month had voted unanimously to abolish the monarchy."
