A jury is scheduled to decide on 14 March on bids in the non-EU-member category by Istanbul and Kiev to hold the title of European Capital of Culture in 2010.
Background:
The 'European City of Culture' project was launched in 1985 on the initiative of Melina Mercouri, then minister of culture of Greece. The underlying goal has been to 'contribute to bringing the peoples of Europe together.' In 2000, the project's name was changed to European Capitals of Culture."
