"Cypriot journalists sweep press freedom awards
TURKISH CYPRIOT journalist Sevgul Uludag and Greek Cypriot journalist and historian Makarios Drousiotis have received the prestigious ‘Press Freedom Award’ from Reporters Without Borders 2005 (Austrian Section).
The award ceremony was held this week at Vienna’s Music House. Sevgul Uludag writes in Yeniduzen and Phileleftheros daily newspapers, as well as in the weekly Cyprus Today and the internet magazine Cockroaches for her research and interviews about the issue of missing persons and mass graves in Cyprus with the relatives of both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot missing persons. Her books were the first of its kind, where she published the stories from both communities of the island.
Drousiotis, a regular columnist for the Cyprus Mail and Politis, received the award for his documentary “The Overflowing Atmosphere” and his article “Our country is Haunted”, which was published on April 24, 2005. An award was also given to Demet Bilge Ergun from Turkey for her articles on violence against women in Turkey."
