Talat hits out at ‘ridiculous’ Ledra objections

TURKISH Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday dismissed as “ridiculous” accusations that he was seeking political and military advantages through the construction of a footbridge at the proposed Ledra Street crossing in the Green Line.
“The military post we demolished was higher than the bridge. And no one will be able to sit on the bridge and look at the Greek side. That is ridiculous,” he told the Cyprus Mail, adding: “We could put up a curtain for them if they wish.”

But on a more serious note, Talat also claimed surprise at UN reaction to work so far carried out by Turkish Cypriot builders at the site of the proposed crossing.

“We discussed with the UN the kind of arrangements we would be making. The problem for the UN… is that they were not expecting such an expedited action from the Turkish Cypriots. Maybe it was done in a hurry, but it shows our enthusiasm,” he said.
