Britain ‘disappointed’ with Ledra obstacles

"Britain ‘disappointed’ with Ledra obstacles

BRITAIN HAS welcomed the idea of reopening Nicosia’s Ledra Street as a crossing point between the two sides and is disappointed with the obstacle emerging, a spokesman for the British Foreign Office said yesterday, adding that his country supports efforts made by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to overcome this obstacle.

Construction in the north side continued unabated yesterday amid protests from all Greek Cypriot political parties.

Turkish Cypriot workers yesterday knocked down a wall and installed the first part of a bridge while United Nations soldiers looked on.

Despite being in favour of bridging the two communities across the divide, Nicosia Mayor Michalakis Zambelas believes that the uniting of the two towns needs to come about with an agreed plan from both sides of the community."
