"Ankara appoints two women as assistant muftis

ANKARA — Turkey has appointed women to the position of assistant mufti, or cleric, for the first time, the country’s top religious affairs official said yesterday. The two will be in the highest positions in Islam occupied by women in Turkey.
Ali Bardakoglu, the head of the Religious Affairs Directorate, said more women will be appointed to such positions in the coming months."
