Jack Straw is today delivering a keynote speech defending the case for allowing Turkey to join the European Union.
The foreign secretary will make the case for opening accession talks as planned on October 3.
Britain has long backed allowing Turkey to enter the EU, saying it could form a vital bridge between west and east.
But while the US also backs Ankara's membership bid, there are strong doubts in France, Germany and elsewhere."
