Years ago when the Turkish Daily News and some other Turkish papers first reported news of villages being evacuated in southeastern Anatolia, the authorities first attempted to deny such activity but later had to admit that in the fight against the separatist gang, the population of some villages had to be resettled in other areas primarily for two reasons:
1- Due to the location of their villages, these people were caught in the crossfire between the separatist militants and the security forces; and
2- The gang was forcing villages to provide it with logistical support, particularly with animals and flour, and the state had to stop that."
