POLITICAL life on our plantation is full of pleasant surprises. Who would have believed that our Government Spokesman Mr Cyprus would not object to one of his daughters marrying a Turkish Cypriot? It just goes to show that we should never make assumptions about public figures we do not know very well, because we are likely to get things wrong.
If we were having an idle chat about intercommunal marriages at our establishment over a skettos, (as men do), and the conversation drifted (as it would) to which Greek Cypriot politician would give his blessing to their kid marrying a Turkish Cypriot, we would not be able to come up with too many names.
Perhaps, some members of the United Democrats and a couple of open-minded Akelites (if that is not a contradiction in terms) would have no problem, but for the rest, marriage of their kid with a Turkish Cypriot would be regarded as the ultimate shame � a bigger shame for him and his family than if he were publicly exposed as cocaine-sniffing, gay paedophile."
