"Invisible restrictions on Turkish Journalists
Esra Erduran
The government's move to postpone the new Turkish Penal Code (TCK) was hailed by journalists' associations in the hope that some of its articles, which were feared to challenge the freedom of press and expression, might be amended. This would help to improve visible restrictions on journalists, but what about the invisible ones?
Journalists in Turkey are still trying to recover from the aftershocks of the 2001 economic crisis, the worst of its kind in the history of the Turkish Republic.
The media was among the worst-hit sectors, and thousands of media workers became unemployed while others had to settle for living on a limited budget, preventing them from doing their best while carrying out their profession."
