Turkey is facing a number of foreign policy challenges that it has to deal with. The first is its relations with the United States and matters related to that country. It's no secret that failure of the Turkish Parliament to pass a resolution to allow U.S. military passage into north Iraq via Turkey in March 2003 chilled relations between the two countries, if it didn't freeze them altogether. The present U.S. administration believes that a long-term ally failed to help out in one of its most comprehensive global projects (bringing democracy and stability to the world by toppling local or regional tyrants). In contrast, Turkey, like many other European and regional countries, believes that invading Iraq and opening the lid of the Pandora's box that is called the Middle East was unwise and unnecessary."
