Turkey is on the cusp of starting European Union membership talks 40 years after early relations were established.
But Cyprus has emerged as a major sticking point.
Should Turkey become part of the EU?
The island is divided between the Turkish north and Greek south. The southern part became a member of the EU in May.
The 25-nation bloc has said Turkey should recognise the Greek part as a condition of membership talks beginning.
But the issue is a sensitive one for Turks and the country's leader says he doubts he can sell the idea to his people."
