"Greek Cypriots defeated by 'conqueror' Erdogan at EU summit: press 18/12/2004
The Greek Cypriot press was left seething Saturday by the EU's decision to give Turkey a date for membership talks, saying the move marked an ignominious defeat for Nicosia despite Ankara's promises on recognising Cyprus. Newspapers like the nationalist Simerini said it was Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who had everything to smile about while Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos was the definite loser. 'Erdogan the Conqueror' growled the Simerini headline which said the Turkish PM could return home in triumph after the European Union gave in to his 'blackmail'. Reportedly, Turkey had threatened to walk out of Friday's summit if the condition on recognising Cyprus was not diluted. "
