"Dr. Cuneyt Ulsever: Ailing US-Turkish relations
Tuesday, February 22, 2005
It is a widely known fact President George W. Bush personally backed the government of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey from the start.
In fact, Mr. Bush personally met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan before he became prime minister, an extraordinary gesture on behalf of the U.S. president, and had shown his trust in him when Mr. Erdogan was prohibited from running in the elections. "

At a time when every passing hour adds to tension in the complex web of relationships among the Turks, Americans and Iraqi Kurds, Ankara and Washington are seeking a compromise on the future use of a critical Turkish air base by U.S. forces.
The heart of the matter is mutual mistrust. The Turkish are wary of U.S. intentions over the future of northern Iraq, while the United States still hold the belief that Turkey's rulers were in solidarity with the Sunni/Baathists in Iraq, not the Iraqi people. Turkey also has deep suspicions over Washington's future plans for Iran and Syria. How, under such circumstances, could the old NATO allies find common ground over Incirlik? "

We should welcome Talat's triumph
"We should welcome Talat's triumph
MEHMET ALI TALAT and his Republican Turkish Party (CTP) were the undisputed winners of Sundays parliamentary elections in the north. The CTP increased its share of the vote by nine percentage points and took almost half of the assemblys 50 seats. He could, realistically, form a minority government without entering a coalition with another party, even though it is more than likely he will form an alliance that will guarantee him a working majority.
His comfortable victory underlined the desire of the majority of Turkish Cypriots for a settlement that would re-unify the island, as opposed to the two-state solution that Dervis Eroglus UBP stood for. Talat has always been committed to re-unification, despite the efforts of the Cyprus government to present him as a new Denktash and as Ankaras puppet hell-bent on partitioning the island. These crude accusations may work domestically, but outside Cyprus nobody takes them seriously."

JTW Comment - Turkish-Russian Relations and Eurasia's Geopolitics
"Turkish-Russian Relations and Eurasia's Geopolitics
By Dr. Bulent Aras
As a result of its geography, Turkey maintains a multi-dimensional and dynamic foreign policy. Turkish foreign policymakers are carefully analyzing their foreign policy options in light of the 9/11 attacks and the war in Iraq. Within this set of complex links, Turkish-Russian relations appear rather perplexing. Historically, there have been many wars between these two states up until the end of WWI. Both countries have imperial legacies and have experienced a post-imperial traumatic loneliness. Great imperial legacies and the feelings of isolation after the collapse of the previous empires are important factors that shape the national memory of these countries."

"Turkey's EU Membership's Impacts on the Central Asia
By Sedat Laciner
Central Asian republic, namely, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, are mostly Turkic countries. They have great similarities with Turkey in terms of ethnic, cultural, and religious composition. In addition to former-Soviet Central Asia, there is also a substantial Turkic population in Afghanistan. The Uighur Region in China, on the eastern sector of the region, is home to the Uighur Turks. As a matter of fact, the common historical name for Central Asia has been 'Turkistan'.
Known to be the homeland of present-day Anatolian Turks, the region has very vivid linguistic, religious and cultural ties with Turkey. These ties have surfaced very strongly with the collapse of the USSR. With the end of the Cold War, labeling the area covering Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia as the Turkish world points to the power of these ties."

The issue began to be debated with the release of concrete data yielded by two public opinion polls conducted in a number of countries by the Marshall Fund and the BBC, consecutively. On both occasions Turks scored the highest in anti-American sentiment, or perhaps more accurately, current U.S. foreign policy. The score that was circulated in the press was so high (82 percent) that the issue not only begs a fair analysis but also affirmative action to curb it. "

HURRIYET- I know that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his staff will ignore the suggestions given by Sukru Elekdag, the experienced diplomat who once served as Turkeys ambassador to Washington. However, the Turkish public should hear his vitally important suggestions. Elekdag recently said, The elections in Kirkuk had many defects. He charged that the polls were held without oversight, ignored census results, and that 20% of the nation didnt vote. He added that such an election couldnt be considered valid, but that unfortunately the world had accepted it. Stating that the elections in the northern city of Kirkuk and the province of al-Tamim were held under particularly bad conditions, Elekdag said Turkey should press on this issue."

"EU: PERA CALLS FOR STEP BACK ON TURKEY TALKS
(AGI) - Ankara, Feb. 21 - Faced with EU accession talks for Turkey senate speaker Marcello Pera called for parties to forego using the issue for the purposes of brownie pointing. "I believe it would improper for political divisions on such a matter to revert to internal politics. Turkey's accession talks are historic and should not be used as domestic political capital and I hence wish to stress my calls for greater efforts on behalf of the EU and Turkey to address issues head during negotiations head on". Marcello Pera highlighted the fact that the EU is living through a time of "internal divisions. We are right in the middle of ratifying the Constitution, given which negotiations with Turkey must stand as a hindrance. Asked whether Turkish membership could be a contentious issue Pera said: "there is an issue of European identity. But if we seriously commit to the process of enlarging the Union I am certain we can tackle any issues at hand. Europe is struggling with issues of identity, foreign power, US relations and the start of Turkish accession talks should be yet another occasion for us to think things over". Questioned by a Turkish journalist over Cyprus Pera said paid tribute to "Turkey's efforts to solve the issue by committing to Kofi Annan's disengagement plan, by preparing for a future referendum, and by its bilateral agreements with the ten new EU Member states. Turkey's future membership makes Cyprus an EU problem. I think the EU should have mustered the foresight to deal with this matter when Cyprus' joined the Union". (AGI) . "
