Turkish unions push for May 1 celebrations in İstanbul's Taksim

A group of nationwide leftist unions have decided to celebrate May 1 Labor Day in İstanbul's Taksim Square, an iconic place given the turbulent historical record of large rallies and demonstrations, some of which ended in bloodshed like the notorious May 1, 1977 incident in which 33 people were killed in a stampede after escaping gunfire from unknown sources.
