With the local election victory under his belt, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) are fired up for their next battle: the August presidential election. While Erdoğan has not yet revealed whether he will run for president, in light of his recent success the odds that he will have shot up.
This election will be the first by public vote as up until now, the president has been elected by Parliament. It is widely believed that Erdoğan would like to run despite the fact that he was unable to bring about the necessary constitutional reform to increase the president's powers. Erdoğan would head into the election in a strong position.
