Water levels in the Melen Reservoir have dropped to 35%

08 January, 16:18

(ANSAmed) – ISTANBUL, JANUARY 8 - Fears are growing over a drought which may hit the Turkish city of Istanbul due to the gradual drying up of the Melen Reservoir, as Anadolu Agency reports. The Melen Reservoir, which provides Istanbul with 676,000 cubic meters of water a day has been drying up since 2007. It was recently found that water levels in the reservoir have dropped to as low as 35%, which is down from 54.4% last year. A lack of rainfall, especially in 2013, explains the low levels in the reservoir, which is found the in Black Sea region of Sakarya and pumped to Istanbul via under-sea pipes.
