Taksim Square has become possibly one of the most joyous places on earth at his moment. The atmosphere is charged with a palpable aura of hope and peace. In all my years of living in Istanbul, I have known Taksim, and the Beyoğlu area as a lively, colourful, but somewhat edgy, place. Normally, arriving at the Taksim metro station is an exercise in crowd surfing as surly, preoccupied people surge on and off the trains with a brusque energy, keen to get to where they are going with a stubborn and forceful projection of “me first”. After one week, Taksim, and the people who flock to it, have been transformed. A miracle has happened. People treat each other with kindness and deference, they exercise patience. Every train arriving at the station is greeted with cheers and clapping and people emerge, beaming and clapping in greeting.
